PSA Help An Admin Out: Dead PC Woes

Discussion in 'News & Announcements' started by Nebulon Ranger, Mar 18, 2017.

  1. So, I'm willing to bet a number of you noticed the giant block notice all over ZEJ trying to raise funds to help a long-serving admin and community leader. Here's the announcement thread to accompany that notice, with more details.

Last week, @Keileon 's Lenovo G50-45 notebook started refusing to boot into Windows, claiming that the hard drive was locked every time she started it up. After I did some cursory Googling, I found out that this appears to be a known problem with the Lenovo G50 series as a whole. She says it may be fixable, but it would involve taking it to a repair shop that may end up charging the price of the unit in fees to fix it, so it might be more efficient to just buy a new machine.

This is a huge issue for her because this was the laptop she used to do the majority of her art commissions, and therefore, earn money. She's currently using an old brick of a laptop with only 2 GB of RAM, and obviously, since digital art and painting uses a ton of memory, that won't be sustainable for larger pieces.

That's where I (and the rest of ZEJ) come in. As soon as I figured out that solving the problem wouldn't've been easy without a paid-for Windows 7 disk--which, given it's out of support and Windows 10 supplanted it--I decided to look into good-quality replacement laptops for her. After a little bit of back-and-forth on the issue, we settled on the ASUS F556UA-EH71 to replace the Lenovo. It has an i7-6500U processor, 8 GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. The only problem is that this laptop isn't the cheapest unit out there, at just over $660 USD.

ZEJ has come together in the past to help users in need, and we can do so again here.
